Sh2-88 A and B with LBN 137 - 139

Scope: Celestron 9.25 Edge HD 235 mm at f/7; Location: DAA Observatory, Shelter Valley, CA;  Dates:  5, 6, 12, 13, 28 June, 2024; Camera: ASI294MM (Baader  Ha OIII, RGB Filters)

Exposure:  Ha 104 x 3.5 minutes (gain-200 2x2), OIII 104 x 3.5 minutes (gain-200 2x2), RGB - 32 each x 1.5 minutes  - (gain-121 2x2).

Processing: Data Collection -  N.I.N.A. (as FITs).  Sub-frame calibration - Pixinsight (WBPP). Sub-frame  registration and integration (Average combine -  Linear fit clipping,  2X drizzle for  Ha, OIII) - PixInsight (WBPP).  Noise reduction - NoiseXTerminator (RGB, Ha, OIII) - PixInsight.  Non-linear stretching for HA, OIII - PixInsight. RGB combine and stretching, Photometric RGB calibration (SPCC)  -  PixInsight.  De-convolution - BlurXTerminator (AI4) - PixInsight. Generation of starless  Ha, OIII, and RGB image for later processing - StarXTerminator (PixInsight).  RGB stars (lower stretch)  for star size control - PixInsight.  Ha and OIII starless  combined in HOO starless image - Pixinsight. HOO starless screened into RGB starless (with HOO brightness mask) - PixInsight. RGB stars  screened into final HOO-RGB starless image - Affinity Photo. Final finishing  - Affinity Photo.  Annotation - PixInsight, Aladin (Simbad), and Affinity Photo. This image is an Narrow Band  Broad Band HOO and RGB image with Narrow Band emphasis.  Image processed at 8288x5644 resolution (2x drizzle stacks). Full Field image size is approximately 6400x4368.

North is to the upper left in this image. The large dominant nebula was cataloged in Lynds (LBN) and Sharpless (Sh2) catalogs from visual wavelength image plates. The region was later studied in IR wavelengths and determined to have star birth in the structure and surrounding area. The is image also shows small bright nebulae in the lower part of the image; One received the designation of  Sh2-88 B. (later determined to be two distinct structures B1, B2). The designation Sh2-88 A has conflicting location data in astronomy references - either to the main  diffuse nebula, the small bright nebula adjacent to B1 / B2. or a third structure off this image field. The structures in this image are estimated to be about 6,500 light years distant.

The three small, bright nebulae on the bottom of the image are also LBN 138 (also Sh2-88 B1/B2), LBN 137, and Milky Way Project MWP1 G061431+001217 (also sometimes Sh2-88 A). The latter also known as an IR Bubble, but has visible wavelength light as evidenced in this image. The large Sh2-88 is also coincident with LBN 139. There are cataloged dark nebulae (Dobashi 2066 and 2070) in this image as well Sh2-88 is an emission line structure. Three ionizing stars have been identified and are indicated in the annotated image  (with bright star symbols).

These objects, information, and some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image.   

The Horizontal Full FOV is approximately 0.66 degrees. Full size, full field image scale is approximately 0.37 arcsec/pix.

Image center approximately - Equatorial 2000: RA: 19h 45m 59s Dec: +25°17'23"
