North is toward the lower left corner. This is the LBN 232
region in the constellation Cygnus (the swan) - it is at the shoulder of its
west wing. This field is a small part of the heart of the swan - that region
from the star Deneb to the Tulip Nebula with the star SADR at its center. The
authors of the DWB catalog (Dickel, Wendker, Bieritz) called this the Cygnus X-1
region. (Cygnus X-1 was the first black hole identified - close to the Tulip
Nebula.) This is a widely studied region and a popular destination for
Astro-photographers.
This
image covers a fainter area of this region in the west wing. It contains
14 DWB objects; 5 LBN objects; 4 LDN objects: and a few other objects.
Together, they combine to show a large faint structure that looks
vaguely like a tree on fire. It is interesting to see that there
is both Ha and OIII emission in this HOO image. These objects and
some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated
image. Horizontal Full FOV is approximately
3.24 degrees. Full size image scale is about 1.94 arcsec/pix.
