Cygnus West Wing - LBN 232 Region

Scope: FSQ-106N at f/5;  Location: DAA Observatory, Shelter Valley, CA; Dates: 2, 3, 7 July, 1, 2 August 2024;  Camera: ASI2600MM (Astronomik type 2c  Ha, OIII and RGB filters)

Exposure: Exposure:  

Panel 1: Ha - 92 x 3.5 min (gain-180), OIII - 36x 3.5 min (gain-180) / 52 x 5 min (gain-220), RGB - 28 x 1.5 min (gain-101) each RGB exposures.

Panel 2: Ha - 83 x 3.5 min (gain-180), OIII - 40 3.5 min (gain-180) / 43 x 5 min (gain-220), RGB - 28 x 1.5 min (gain-101) each RGB exposures.

Processing (Both panels): Data Collection -  N.I.N.A. Sequencer (as FITs).  Sub-frame calibration - Pixinsight (WBPP). Sub-frame  registration and integration (Average combine -  Linear clipping) - PixInsight (WBPP).   Noise reduction - NoiseXTerminator - PixInsight. Non-linear stretching, normalization and gradient removal - PixInsight. Photometric RGB calibration (SPCC) - PixInsight. Deconvolution of  Emission Line, and RGB combine - BlurXTerminator. Generation of starless nebulosity Emission line and combined RGB images for later processing - Star XTerminator.  Curves, Levels, RGB combine - PixInsight.  Emission Line starless  combine (HOO) - PixInsight.  Mosaic by Coordinates registration of each panel  (both RGB stars panels  and Emission Line starless panels - PixInsight. Pixel Math merge of both panels - PixInsight. RGB stars Mosaic screened to Emission Line starless Mosaic - Pixinsight.  Final finishing, crop, and resample  - Affinity Photo.   Annotation - PixInsight, Aladin (Simbad), and Affinity Photo. This image is an HOO starless composition - with RGB stars added. Mosaic Image processed at 8053x6289 resolution. Final Image size is approximately  6000x4662.

North is toward the lower left corner. This is the LBN 232 region in the constellation Cygnus (the swan) - it is at the shoulder of its west wing. This field is a small part of the heart of the swan - that region from the star Deneb to the Tulip Nebula with the star SADR at its center. The authors of the DWB catalog (Dickel, Wendker, Bieritz) called this the Cygnus X-1 region. (Cygnus X-1 was the first black hole identified - close to the Tulip Nebula.)  This is a widely studied region and a popular destination for Astro-photographers.

This image covers a fainter area of this region in the west wing. It contains 14 DWB objects; 5 LBN objects; 4 LDN objects: and a few other objects. Together, they combine to show a large faint structure that looks vaguely like a tree on fire. It is interesting to see that there is  both Ha and OIII emission in this HOO image.

These objects and some of the brighter stars are identified in the annotated image Horizontal Full FOV is approximately 3.24 degrees. Full size image scale is about 1.94 arcsec/pix.

Image center is approximately - Equatorial 2000: RA: 20h 01m 01s Dec: +42°07'48"
