Double Cluster in Perseus



Scope: MegRez II  f/4.8 Location: Del Mar, CA   19 Oct. 2006  Camera: Artemis285

Exposure: 10 x 60 sec  Luminance with IR Block Filter (bin 1x1); 8 x 60 sec RGB (1x1 bin)

Processing: Images were captured Artemis Capture (as FITs). Aligned/stacked in Registax 3 and saved as FITS. Luminance and Color channels were scaled and rough color balanced in Astroart. Central Gradient removal was performed in Astroart. Channels were co-registered in Astroart. The 60 sec IR block exposures were used as the main luminance construction with level adjustments and curves to bring out dim stars. Final LRGB combine was done in Photoshop.   Final touches were done in Photoshop. A  light surface blur was applied to the background. Final Image size is approximately 1392x1040.

North is up in this image. The catalog references for these clusters are NGC 884 (left) and NGC 869 (right). However, together they are more commonly known as the Double Cluster in Perseus. The clusters are in association with each other at only a few hundred light years apart. These clusters are about 7,000 light years from Earth This image replaces an earlier image taken in Oct 2005 and can be seen in the archives here.  Horizontal FOV is 82'
