The Cocoon Nebula, IC 5146, and Lynd's Dark 1035

Scope: Megrez 80 mm  APO at f/5.2; Location: Laguna Mountains, CA;  14 August, 2010; Camera: Canon XT 350D (Baader ACF modified)

Exposure: 14 x 6 min  (unfiltered)   ISO 800 , 8 Darks, no Flats 

Processing: Images were captured with DSLR Focus  and saved as RAW file format. Exposures were decoded and dark corrected in IRIS. Exposures were aligned and stacked in IRIS with Sigma Median.  Dark point equalization and rough color balance  were done in IRIS.  Gamma and saturation adjustments were also done in IRIS.  Stretch and crop adjustments were done in Photoshop.    Background noise reduction was performed by PixInsight LE  (SGBNR).  Final stretching and touch up was done in PhotoShop.   The presented image is a crop from the full frame and resized to a lower sampling rate.  Final Image size is approximately 3452x2292 - re-sampled to 2400x1594.

North is up in this image.  This image is guided.  This is a wide field image of the Cocoon Nebula (to the left). Also seen (centrally) is Lynd's Dark Nebula - LDN 1035. There are actually several other less dominant dark nebulae (catalogued in Lynd's Dark Nebula Catalogue) seen from left to right across the image. It gives the appearance of the Cocoon Nebula traveling through space an leaving a dark wake.  The Cocoon Nebula is approximately 3,000 light years distant from Earth -  although distance estimates vary on the Cocoon Nebula.   The Horizontal FOV is little over 180 arc minutes.
